Editing Emphasis
The editing emphasis prepares students for desk work in print and Web newsrooms. Students learn how to edit print and online articles for style; sourcing; logic; and structure. Headline-writing and preparation of graphic material are also covered. Design courses for Web and print products prepare students to compose and publish news products. Courses stress understanding of the news-production process and the checks and balances that generate superior news products, as well as the elements of solid news judgment. Graduates of the program will be ready to assume editing duties in a wide range of newspaper, magazine and online news media. Old and new media alike rely on editors to assure product quality, and the demand for good editors will remain strong into the foreseeable future.
