College of Communication College of Communication The University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism School of Journalism

Internships

As an upper-division journalism student, you are eligible to receive up to four hours of credit for internship work. The School of Journalism offers two internship courses:

• J331K Projects in Professional Experience (3-hour course)

• J131P Internship – a one-hour course designed to offer students a second credit-based internship if they have already completed J331K.

The College of Communication also offers course credit for journalism students interning in an area outside of journalism: COM 350 and COM 150, both titled Communication Internship.

All of these courses are offered on the pass/fail basis only.

You may register for the course during any of your registration access periods. You are responsible for finding and securing an internship position and then registering with Communication Career Services (CCS) before the sixth class day of the long semester (or the fourth class day of the summer session) for which you are registered for the course. CCS will provide all necessary paperwork. If you are not registered with CCS by the appropriate class day, you will be dropped from the course. Please download the CCS internship syllabus and application form from the CCS site or pick it up in the CCS office, CMA A3.102. The CCS site also provides valuable advice and information on how to find an internship.

Please Note - Recent Changes Made In Internship Policies

The School of Journalism and the College of Communication will no longer offer students "prior approval" to complete internships during the summer and receive academic credit for these internships in the immediately following fall semester. Students will also not be allowed to receive retroactive credit for already completed internships. This policy change is in response to student, university, and employer concerns regarding intern and internship liability issues.

All students planning to complete internships for academic credit must be registered for their respective internship classes during the semester they are interning. Students interning for academic credit during the summer must be registered for a summer internship, students interning for academic credit during the fall must be registered for a fall internship, and students interning for academic credit during the spring must be registered for a spring internship. No exceptions will be made and no retroactive internship credit will be awarded.

This policy applies to all internship courses including, but not limited to: J331K, J131P, COM 350, and COM 150.
