Photojournalism Graduate Wins LLILAS Photo Contest

Meridith Kohut, a graduate of the College of Communication's Photojournalism Program, won second place in the 2008 UT Latin American Photo Contest for a powerful image of women in Panabaj, Guatemala, watching as the bodies of victims of a landslide are recovered. LLILAS graduate student Riitta-Ilona Koivumaeki won honorable mention for a dreamlike photograph taken in Arequipa, Peru, shortly after the 2001 earthquake.
LLILAS is pleased to announce the finalists in the 2008 UT Latin American Photo Contest. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni submitted more than 180 photographs from almost every country in Latin America.The three winning photographs will be displayed along the north hall at LLILAS, adjacent to the Vistas photo exhibit.
The three selections also will be featured in upcoming LLILAS publications, including the next issue of Portal. The first place photo, an action shot of two boys riding home on a horse after playing capoeira in Salvador do Bahia, Brazil, by UT alumn Francisco H. Cortes, will receive a $200 cash award.
