The Sports Institute Adds Multimedia Training

Do you have your own sports website? Would you like to learn from sports journalists such as Bob Ryan, Michael Smith and Sean McDonough? Have you ever been to ESPN? The answer to all these questions will be a resounding “yes” after enrolling in the Sports Institute at Boston University.

Responding to the changes in the sports journalism profession, the Sports Institute will teach you not only how to build your own website but also post your resume tape and your “clips” so that the industry can see what you’ve got. Competition is more challenging and employers want skills in multimedia training.

The Sports Institute is a four week intensive program of study in sports journalism.

Director Frank H. Shorr, an eight time Emmy award winner, has been running the program since he founded the Sports Institute at Boston University in 2001. Shorr teaches Broadcast Sports, where students produce a twice weekly show in a state-of-the-art studio. In addition, Shorr leads the seminar series that brings industry professionals on campus to discuss topics of relevance to sports journalists. A list of last year’s seminar guests can be found on the Sports Institute website.

Noted author and journalist Jack Falla heads up the Sports Journalism class as he has for the past six years. Karla Valance, a visiting associate professor at Boston University, joins this year for the brand new course, Multimedia. Valance has more than 30 years of national and international media experience in multiple media. The curriculum includes instruction in Dreamweaver, Final Cut editing, HTML, and gathering of digital audio and video.

Graduates of the Sports Institute at Boston University have gone on to secure jobs at ESPN, the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, WNBC-TV , Turner Sports and Boston.com as well as the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

The Sports Institute at Boston University provides a highly specialized curriculum for motivated students within a nationally renowned setting. Registration is now underway.
