J 340C Leadership, Management, and the Media
Description and Objectives
This course will introduce students to theories and real world applications of leadership and management. As a result of the class, including lectures, readings, discussions, case studies, films, leadership assessment tests, speakers, group projects, and individual assignments, students will be able to:
- Explain the relationship among leadership, corporate culture, operating environment, professional values, etc.
- Articulate and assess major theories of leadership.
- Compare and contrast leaders and managers.
- Explain the significance of diversity and gender for news media organizations and their leaders.
- Investigate and analyze news media leaders.
- Describe, interpret, and assess issues reported in the news that are relevant to leadership, management, and media.
- Examine the role of ethics in leadership.
- Formulate and recommend a plan for news consumer retention in the 21st Century.
- Practice effective leadership skills and think like a news media leader.
Grading System
Attendance, class and group participation, and news briefing: 20%
Group Project 1: 20%
Group Project 2: 20%
Task Force Assignment: 20%
Individual Profile of an Innovative Leader Report and Presentation: 20%
Prerequisites
J 310 and J 315 with a grade of at least C in each, a score of 45 or better on the Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation (GSP) test, a score of 29 or better on the Word Processing (WP) test, and admission to a Journalism Upper Division sequence.
