J 349T Long-form Storytelling for TV News
Description and Objectives
This course teaches broadcast journalism seniors and graduate students the techniques of documentary producing especially as applied to stories for television news magazines. Students will produce a 7-10 minute story during the semester, with emphasis on story planning, character selection and development, and narrative writing. Students will shoot, edit and narrate their own material.
Grading System
Final long-form story - 50%
Signposts (such as onesheet, character development, script etc) - 35%
Lab work, workshop and class participation, and quizzes - 15%
Prerequisites
A score of 45 or better on the Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation (GSP) test, a score of 29 or better on the Word Processing (WP) test, and admission to a Journalism Upper Division sequence. Students must be knowledgeable in the use of DV camera and proficient in Final Cut Pro.
