The School of Journalism of The University of Texas will host its seventh ASNE institute.
The basic goal of the institute is to provide initial training to 35 qualified applicants, selected as part of a national, competitive application process administered by ASNE. The UT workshop, one of five in the country, will provide intensive training to prepare high school journalism advisors to meet the standards for success in developing thriving high school newspapers, to serve the newspaper industry’s and American journalism schools needs for skilled journalism majors, and to provide support for the trainees to insure their success on the job.
The Institute will be July 19-31, 2009
Teachers from all over the country will be housed at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Austin. Meals will be at various locations, designed to coincide with daily activities of the residency.
Outline of work during the institute:
Essentials of reporting, photography, Web design, copy-editing, headline writing, newspaper layout and design, introduction to high school newspaper advising and ethics will receive priority. Included will be production of an online newspaper (published through the UT School of Journalism production facilities on campus).
• Use of computers will be stressed throughout the residency program: Electronic editing of text and photos and production of a newspaper. Participants will work in a dedicated facility that includes two rooms, each with 17 Apple iMac G5 computers with 20-inch monitors.
• Software installed on each workstation includes Adobe InDesign, Adobe InCopy, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Netscape Communicator. Other equipment in the lab includes color laser printers and a color flatbed scanner and a negative scanner.
• A field trip to the Austin American-Statesman is also planned.
