Oral History as Journalism

Students enrolled in Oral History as Journalism learned about oral history interviewing techniques, best practices in videotaping, capturing that videotape so that we can display it on the web, parsing what we’ve learned into stories to be presented on the web and on a hard copy. Alternative Media

This cross-listed, interdisciplinary survey course for graduate and undergraduate students, explores the journalistic, sociological and historical role of the alternative press. It examines coverage in the tradition of The Nation, In These Times, Progressive, Mother Jones and other similar publications. It also provides students with skills and the opportunity to produce InCite—a similar web publication driven by intellectual diversity. Students gain skills in writing, reporting, editing and producing NPR-quality radio news. Students enrolled in J322D will report and produce high-quality programs for broadcast on public radio and the Web. For more information, contact Kris Wilson.

Narratives

This publication was part of the U.S. Latinos and Latinas World War II Oral History Project directed by Professor Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez and the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Narratives featured stories on those who participated in World War II, and on important events that defined that crucial time. The newspaper was produced as part of the narrative journalism course taught by Rivas-Rodriguez. J335 Narrative Journalism is no longer offered and the newspaper is no longer produced, however to browse previous articles, please visit the Narratives site. burntORANGE magazine

A four-color, 48-page magazine, burntORANGE is published twice a year by magazine students working under the guidance of faculty members. The magazine has finished first (2007) and second (2008) for General Excellence (Single Issue, Ongoing Magazine) in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication national magazine contests. The magazine is primarily produced in Magazine Management classes (J-347), although other students also work on each issue. Stories are usually produced in School of Journalism writing classes. Professors Dave Garlock and Dennis Darling advise the students with each issue. Reporting China Maymester

The Reporting China Maymester Abroad Program is a five-and-a-half week program that takes place in China from late May to late June. Professor Tracy Dahlby leads students in a new apprenticeship-style course in international reporting that takes them to various locations in China, including Beijing and Shanghai.

Texas Journalist

Broadcast students produce a weekly newscast that airs on KVR at 9 p.m. on Thursdays and on Austin cable television.
