Major Requirements
To enroll in upper-division College of Communication courses, the following requirements must be met:
• A 2.25 UT GPA and 2.0 GPA in Communication are required.
• To enroll in J315 and most upper-division journalism courses, students must pass the Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation Test (GSP) with a score of at least 45 and the Word Processing Test with a score of at least 29.
• A student may not register for upper-division journalism courses without acceptance into one of the six sequences within the School of Journalism: Broadcast, Magazine & Editing, Newspaper Reporting & Writing, Copy Editing & Design, Multimedia, or Photojournalism. See Applying for Upper-Division Standing.
• A grade of C or better is required in each College of Communication course, unless it is offered only on a pass/fail basis.
• A minimum of 80 semester hours must be taken outside of journalism and mass communication, and no fewer than 65 of those hours must be in the liberal arts and sciences.
Each area of study recommends a specific sequence of courses.
At least 33 hours, but no more than 36 total hours, of journalism coursework are required. Course offerings vary by semester. Please consult the Course Schedule and your academic advisor for assistance with your schedule and to determine your appropriate catalog. Registration information also is available online.

Core Courses: 12 hours from the following:
• J310 Critical Issues in Journalism
• J315 News Media Writing & Editing

• J360 Media Law & Ethics Courses within the School of Journalism are divided into two areas: studies and skills.
Studies Courses: 6 hours (at least 3 hours from J340C or J349T) from the following:
• J340C Topics in Journalism, Communication, and Culture (Recent topics include: Mass Media & Minorities, African Americans & the Media, Journalism & Religion)
• J348S Media Management
• J349T Topics in Journalism (Recent topics include: Business Journalism, International Reporting, Oral History as Journalism)
• J363 Theories of Mass Communication
• J366E History of Journalism

Note: No more than 42 hours of College of Communication courses will count for degree credit. No course in the College of Communication may be taken pass/fail unless offered only on pass/fail basis.
In addition to major requirements, you must complete general education requirements and elective courses in order to meet the 120 hours required for graduation.
