Ernesto Bazan

Documentary photographer Ernesto Bazan will be visiting the J-sch for 2 days. He will be meeting with our photojournalism students, reviewing portfolios and visiting classes.

Since 1992, Ernesto Bazan has been photographing the island of Cuba, documenting this unique time in Cuban history called--the Special Period.?? This body of work has earned him some of the world’s most prestigious photographic awards including the Eugene Smith award, the Mother Jones prize, a World Press award, and fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Until summer last year Ernesto who is Sicilian by birth lived in Cuba for more than a decade. His lyrical sensitivity and unflinching eye provide an intimate and compassionate window onto the experiences of a people who despite being some of our closest neighbors and the subject of so much political polemic in the United States remain unknown and gravely misunderstood.
