4.6 Media and Democracy in Latin America

A reporter, author and longtime correspondent in Latin America, John Dinges is the author of three books on the region, the most recent of which is "The Condor Years: How Pinochet and His Allies Brought Terrorism to Three Continents." Last October, before the elections, Dinges published a story about John McCain's Private Visit With Chilean Dictator Pinochet in 1986.

Dinges is currently associate professor of journalism at Columbia University and co-director of the Centro de Investigación e Información Periodística (CIPER), Santiago, Chile, which began operation in May 2007. In his talk, Dinges will discuss the role of media in supporting democracy in Latin America.
