Knight Center Offers Two Events Focusing on Latin America

The University of Texas at Austin's Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, in collaboration with the Open Society Institute's Media Program, are pleased to invite you to two exceptional events.

Defending Human Rights and Freedom of Expression in Colombia

Thursday, September 10, 12:30–2:00 p.m.
College of Communication, LBJ Room, CMA 5.160

Featuring Hollman Morris, an internationally acclaimed journalist whose weekly television show, Contravía (Countercurrent), boldly confronts the violence that ravages Colombia. For 15 years Morris has reported on the impact of the country's long-running guerrilla war on the most marginalized members of Colombian society, including it's peasants, Afro-descendants, and indigenous peoples. His exclusive eyewitness accounts have won him the 2007 Human Rights Watch Defender Award in 2007 and 2006 International Press Freedom Award, as well as intimidation and death threats.

Journalism and Democracy in Latin America

Thursday, September 10, 3:30–5:00 p.m.
College of Communication, LBJ Room, CMA 5.160

Despite the unprecedented democratization of the region in the last decades, Latin American journalists still face many problems, from violence to lack of access to information. The panelists will analyze the situation on four countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

Featuring Juanita León, director of La Silla Vacía (Colombia), Gabriel Michi, president of Foro de Periodismo Argentino (Argentina), Gustavo Gorriti, journalist in residence at the Instituto de Defensa Legal (Peru), and Felipe Heusser, founder of Votainteligente.cl (Chile). Moderated by Dr. Henry Dietz, UT Dept. of Government.
