H. Iris Chyi received her bachelor's degree from National Taiwan University, a master's degree in communication from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.

Prior to coming back to UT in 2007, Chyi was on the faculty at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2000 to 2004 and at the University of Arizona from 2004 to 2007. She also has worked for several online organizations, including www.ins.com, an Internet consulting firm that develops strategies for multinational companies in Greater China; Cox Interactive Media, which operates the online edition of The Austin American-Statesman and Austin360.com; and ChinaTimes.com, the first Chinese-language online newspaper.

Chyi's research interests include the economics of online content, communication technology, and news framing. She is interested in the relationship between online and traditional news media in multiple geographic markets. She developed a theoretical model on the dual-geographic markets of online newspapers and has conducted several empirical studies from both users’ and suppliers’ perspectives in the U.S. and in Asia. A recent study (co-authored with George Sylvie) received two awards at the 2006 AEJMC Convention – one was the Top Paper Award and the other the International Newspaper Marketing Association Award for industry relevance.

Chyi’s academic research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Media Economics, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Newspaper Research Journal and International Journal of Media Management. She also writes commentaries for major newspapers in Taiwan and Hong Kong and serves as a reviewer for academic journals and organizations around the world.

She has taught theoretical and skills courses at graduate and undergraduate levels, including Information Technology and Society, Online Journalism, Directions in News Technology, Multidisciplinary Approaches to Information Technology, Media Economics, Multimedia Design and Development, and Communication Research Methods.
