Michael R. Whitney

Michael R. Whitney was Senior Broadcast Producer of 60 Minutes at CBS News until he left in 2007 to begin teaching at UT. He worked at CBS News first as a radio news writer and then in a in a variety of senior positions in television for 33 years, wining 23 News Emmy Awards along the way. Before joining 60 Minutes, Whitney worked on 60 Minutes II, the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, CBS Sunday Morning, and the CBS Morning News. In addition to his Emmys he won four Peabody Awards and three Alfred I. DuPont Awards for his work on 60 Minutes and 60 Minutes II. Whitney also served for several years as Miami Bureau Chief. Before life at CBS News he worked as a producer and newswriter at WOR Radio in New York City, and as a reporter for his hometown paper in Rochester, New York. He has taught journalism at Northwestern University, Marymount Manhattan College, and for the US Army at the Defense Information School. He was editor of the Daily Northwestern, and received a BSJ and MSJ from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
