J-School Presents First Falik and Powell Awards
Francine Falik Journalism Award

Given to a dedicated student journalist with a demonstrated interest in print journalism to pursue a special writing project or internship during the summer.
The 2007 award recipient: Marjon Rostami (print major) will spend the summer as a reporting intern at the Portland Oregonian newspaper, honing her skills as a writer and reporter. The award will be used for travel and lodging expenses.
This award was established in 2006 with a gift from Susie and Jay Golding and James Falik in loving memory of former Houston Post Society writer Francine Falik whose dedication to print journalism inspired the creation of this gift.
Helen M. Powell Traveling Fellowship

Given to a student to support travel, either domestic or international, for the purpose of learning about other places and their peoples and reporting on, portraying or depicting them for an American audience through the craft of journalism.
The 2007 fellowship recipient: Hala Aboudaher (photojournalism major)
To travel to Mozambique to work in an AIDS orphanage, photograph the children who reside there, and return to tell their story to an American audience in order to show "the hearts and souls of these children." The award will be used for travel expenses.
This fellowship was established in 2006 with a gift from David Powell and his wife Vicki Weber in loving memory of his late mother Helen M. Powell.
