J-School Student Received Honorable Mention in College Photography Contest

As a photography intern with The Santiago Times in Chile last summer, second year graduate student Marc Hamel covered a nationwide student protest. This photo received honorable mention from the 27th Annual College Photography Contest sponsored by Photographer's Forum magazine and Nikon.
When asked to describe the scene he photographed, Hamel replied, "Mounting anger over the inadequate public school system in Chile led secondary school students to mobilize in protest. Students across the country went on strike and took to the streets to demonstrate. The marches turned violent when anarchists and hooligans joined the protests and encouraged some students to confront police. After several days of chaos in central Santiago, and across the country, student leaders reached what was seen as a temporary agreement with government officials and classes resumed. The protests will be remembered by many Chileans for the fact that they were the first major public demonstrations since dictator General Augusto Pinochet ceded presidential power in 1990."
