Photojournalism Student Wins PDN Annual Award

The Photo District News (PDN) Photo Annual 2007 represents the year 2006 in pictures. Categories include Advertising, Photojournalism, Personal Work, Stock Photography, Web Site, and Student Work, among others. Eli Kaplan is one of the Student Work winners. Kaplan completed the award winning photo essay in Professor Eli Reed's Introduction to Photojournalism class.

The issue that announces the award winners will be on newsstands in May.

Dry Spell: End of an Agricultural Lineage

For most cattle ranchers in the United State, it has become impossible to make a living exclusively in the beef industry. In what may be a trend across the nation, the children of numerous ranchers are choosing to either raise cattle in their spare time or not at all. Melvin Dube, 61, is one of three ranchers still working full-time in McDade, Texas.

Melvin's family has been involved in agriculture since his great-grandfather emigrated from Germany. When he dies, Melvin's land will be split between his four children, none of whom will raise cattle full-time.
