The Gene Burd Urban Journalism Award was created in 2006 to honor reporting, research, and critical analysis of urban issues and problems. At a time during which we witness the extraordinary acceleration of communication technology with its changing impact on community and social relationships, the role of the journalist has become increasingly important. This $5,000 award for each journalist honors the best in urban journalism practice for its impact on the public understanding of policies and practices supporting viable and livable cities. Peter Applebome and Joe Garreau are unique journalistic and socially conscious voices speaking to the issues of urbanity.
