Barnstorm XX -- Eddie Adams Workshop 2007

By Toni Harris (main source was Eddie Adams Workshop)

"It's a pretty big deal that 5 UT students have been accepted for Barnstorm XX," according to Eli Reed, Magnum Photographer and UT Clinical Professor of Photojournalism.

The Eddie Adams Workshop is an intense four-day gathering of the top professionals in photojournalism, along with 100 carefully selected students and beginning photojournalists. Those current and former J-sch students accepted for this year's workshop include: Eli Kaplan, Tania Savayan, Katie Hayes, Masie Crow and Meridith Kohut. UT's Ben Sklar was accepted in 2006 with a portfolio that included work from Katrina.

As stated on the workshop website, "The workshop's purpose is to create a forum in which an exchange of ideas, techniques, and philosophies can be shared between both established members and newcomers to the profession of picture journalism." The workshop is tuition-free and the 100 students and beginning photojournalists are chosen based on the merit of their portfolios and letters of recommendation as judged by the workshop's board of directors. 2007 will mark the workshop's 20th year. The chosen students will be divided into 10 teams of 10. A photographer, an editor and a researcher, all professionals within the profession of picture journalism, will lead each team. The four days are divided between shooting, editing, speeches and panel discussions. Students will have the opportunity for one-on-one time with editors to discuss their portfolios at what is known as the 11:30 Club. Barnstorm is 100% digital and during the workshop the students expect constant interaction with the biggest and brightest minds in photography today and, as their website claims, "nowhere else will you find 150 top-notch faculty members for 100 students!"
