Is online news like Ramen Noodles? How users perceive digital content as inferior goods

A talk by Iris Chyi, assistant professor in the School of Journalism atThe University of Texas at Austin

Wednesday, April 20
Noon – 1:30 p.m.
LBJ Conference Room (CMA 5.160)

Hsiang Iris Chyi is an assistant professor in journalism at the University of Texas at Austin and winner of the 2010 College of Communication Faculty Research Award. Her work focuses on the economics of new media and online journalism, using empirical data to demystify the economics of online content. In her talk, professor Chyi will address some of the questions befuddling so many industry experts and media scholars: Why has the newspaper industry failed to identify any sustainable business models for online news? If the print newspaper is “dying” and the future is online, how come no one is willing to pay for online news, while so many are still paying for the print edition? Chyi’s research shows that online news, like Ramen Noodles, is an "inferior good."

This event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Senior Fellows, the honors program of the College of Communication.
