Two UT Journalism Alumni Receive Austin Distinguished Alumnus Award

Two UT journalism grads will be honored Oct. 14 by the University of Texas at the Austin Distinguished Alumnus Awards

They are:
John W. Barnhill, Jr. — BJ 1959, Brenham, TX
Barnhill is a retired executive vice president of Blue Bell Creameries and a former UT regent. In his career of almost 40 years, he helped lead the company from a small creamery to the number three brand of ice cream in the country.

Jane Chesnutt — BJ 1973, New York, NY
Chesnutt is a civic leader and formereditor-in-chief of Woman’s Day magazine. She has a special interest in issues of women’s health, women business leaders and the performing arts.

John and Jane join a grand list of former distinguished alums with degrees and ties to the UT School of Journalism:

Karen Elliott House formerly of the Wall Street Journal

State Sen. Judith Zaffarini
Shirley Strum Kenny, retired president of the State University of New York at Stony Brook (she and her late husband Bob Kenny both were editors of The Daily Texan).

The annual award, created in 1958 by The Ex-Students' Association, recognizes up to six Texas Exes who have distinguished themselves professionally and through service to The University of Texas at Austin.
