Journalism Undergraduate Scholarships & Requirements

The Sam Attlesey Presidential Endowed Scholarship -- to benefit an undergraduate student in the School of Journalism who has earned at least 45 semester hours of credit and has a strong interest in a career as a journalist covering politics and/or public policy.

John W. Barnhill, Jr. - Blue Bell Creameries, Inc. Endowed Presidential Scholarship - Award is made to journalism major who is a Texas resident and a permanent resident of the United States or a United States citizen.

The Belo Foundation Scholarship - Given to students with major in the College of Communication.

Sara Burroughs Endowed Scholarship in Print Journalism - Support for undergraduate news-editorial students.

Bob Brister Outdoor Writing Internship & Scholarship – Given to a junior or senior journalism major to fund an unpaid internship with accompanying scholarship and who have an interest in outdoor writing or related area (conservation, preservation, nature or the environment); preference given to students with an appreciation for recreational hunting or fishing as demonstrated in required essay. Student must successfully complete a course in Environmental Journalism or appropriate course in the Departments of Geography or Biology.

Cabot Educational Grant in Journalism – Given to a journalism major entering their senior year.

Lloyd Allen David Endowed Presidential Scholarship Fund in Journalism - Given to students with major in Journalism.

Norris G. Davis Journalism Scholarship Fund - Given to students with major in Journalism and interest in print demonstrated by activities and achievements.

Charles Robert Devall Journalism Award - Award is made to upper-division journalism student who has demonstrated the greatest independence and originality as a journalism student and who has definite plans for making a career of newspaper work.

Maxine Smith Elam Centennial Endowed Scholarship Fund in Journalism - Given to students with major in Journalism; preference given to students on the Daily Texan staff.

Frenchy Falik Journalism Award – Given to a student entering their senior year and dedicated to print journalism to pursue a special writing project or unpaid internship during the preceding summer.

Martin L. Gibson, Jr. Endowed Scholarship in Journalism - Given to students with major in Journalism and interest in print demonstrated by activities and achievements; preference given to students on the Daily Texan staff.

Robert M. Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund in Journalism - Given to students with major in Journalism and interest in print or photo.

Doc Williamson Lott and Loise McDonald Lott Scholarship – given to women undergrad who have completed a summer journalism intership (can be used to pay half the salary of an internship); consideration for financial need.

Georgia Lucas Scholarship Fund in Journalism - Given to students with major in Journalism

Ward C. Mayborn Journalism Scholarship - Awarded to an upper-division student on the basis of need and merit with an interest in newspaper work. Student should also show initiative in supporting themselves.

Staley and Beverly McBrayer Endowed Fund in Community Journalism - Award made to students showing an interest in community journalism. If no applicants indicate such an interest, awards may go to students interested in small-market broadcast field first, then from other general areas in journalism.

Carl R. Miller Journalism Scholarship Fund - Award made to a student who aspires to enter the field of community or weekly newspaper journalism.

Frank Morrow Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Business Journalism - Award made to a journalism major that has taken courses in business, economics, accounting, marketing and/or psychology and has at least 45 hours in residence; preference given to financial need and fluency in Spanish.

Sonia and Javier Perez Scholarship in Journalism – Given to Spanish speaking students with financial need and from the Texas Rio Grande Valley.

J. Michael Quinn Scholarship and Student Support Endowment in Journalism – Given to upper division student in print journalism, member of professional organizations and has financial need.

Helen M. Powell Traveling Fellowship – Given to a student to support travel, either domestic or international, for the purpose of learning about other places and their peoples and reporting on, portraying or depicting them for an American audience through the craft of journalism.

DeWitt C. Reddick Journalism Scholarship Fund - Given to students with a major in Journalism, financial need with a preference for participation in UIL journalism events and dedication to a career in journalism.

Joe Roddy, Jr. Headliners Foundation Scholarship in Broadcast News - Award made to a journalism major in broadcast news who is registered as a full-time student with a GPA of 3.0 and a Texas resident.

M.S. "Doc" Sellers Scholarship in Print Journalism - Award given to a journalism major with definite plans to enter newspaper work.

S. Griffin Singer Student Support Scholarship - Award made to upper-division student in print journalism with 3.0 GPA or better; has exhibited professional intent in extra-curricular activities and internships and membership in one or more of the student professional organizations.

Press Women of Texas (formerly Texas Professional Communicators) - Award given to a journalism major with academic ability and financial need.

Thomas Thompson Journalism Scholarship - Award made to journalism majors with financial need.

Thomas Thompson Texas Exes Association Scholarship - Prefer News/PA major.

Carmage & Martha Ann Walls Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Journalism - Award given to students of journalism who are from the geographic areas served by Southern Newspapers, Inc. and Walls Investment newspapers, both of Houston.

Hal John Wimberly Memorial Scholarship in Journalism - Award made to full-time junior majoring in journalism, preferably with a specialization in newspaper and with financial need.

William Russell Young, Jr. Centennial Scholarship – for grad and undergrads in the area of photojournalism with demonstrated talent in the field.
