Other Scholarship Resources
A large number of other scholarships are available to undergraduate students in The University of Texas at Austin and through federal, state and private institutions. To learn more about these resources, visit TexasScholarships.org. This site was created to bring together in one convenient place all of the scholarship resources at The University of Texas, including information from the various colleges, departments, alumni and administrative units. The site is geared towards current and prospective students, parents, and student affairs staff. There are many links to scholarships available outside of the University, as well.
The School of Journalism awards over 100 scholarships (view complete J-sch list with requirements) to continuing journalism majors and incoming transfer students annually. At this time, there are no scholarships available to entering first-year students.
For information regarding scholarships for entering freshmen, please see the Office of Student Financial Services.
See this site for information regarding additional scholarships from the College of Communication.
• Applicants must be currently enrolled in the School of Journalism
• Must have at least one semester completed in the College of Communication
• Must be enrolled full-time (12 hours) at the University of Texas for both the fall and spring semesters in the academic year for which the scholarship is given
• Must have an overall UT-Austin GPA of at least 2.25
• The J-sch general application – please make sure you read the application carefully and fill it out completely. There are a few scholarships that require an additional specific application; those applications are listed and can be accessed in the box to the upper right.
• A statement of purpose (250 words/1 page) highlighting your career goals and including reasons why you chose journalism as your area of study. The Scholarships and Awards Committee looks for creativity, clarity and enthusiasm as well as good writing, including the use of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and attention to neatness, which is generally characteristic of typewritten or word-processed material.
• Two recommendations that may be mailed or faxed by the stated deadline. Strong recommendations generally include supporting written comments. If you have been attending college for at least a year, it is expected that university faculty members will provide at least some of your references. Ideally, at least one reference will come from a School of Journalism instructor or from someone in a journalistic position. High school and hometown recommendations are considered strong references only if the student has been at the College of Communication for less than one year. Recommendations from family friends and students, however, are not considered. Download the Recommendation Form (PDF).
• An academic summary from UT Direct including all coursework, including transferred work, and your upper-division grade point average and cumulative grade point average in each field and in all courses taken at UT Austin.
