The School of Journalism and Media offers the following minors for undergraduate students on the 2016-2018 and 2018-2020 catalogs not majoring in Journalism:
- Minor in Journalism
Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in their own major before applying for a minor. Moody students have additional criteria for pursuing a minor credential.
- Moody students may only pursue one minor/certificate credential.
- Moody students following the 2020-2022 and earlier catalogs must apply for their minor before they have completed 65% of their degree requirements.
- Moody students following the 2022-2024 catalog must apply for their minor before they have completed 75% of their degree requirements.
Moody students should contact their advisor if they have questions about these policies.
Minor in Journalism
The minor in Journalism provides undergraduate students across the university the opportunity to study a range of courses that will help prepare them for the digital communication economy. Students who successfully complete this minor will gain such skills as writing clearly and succinctly; telling stories in multiple formats, including audio, video and data visualizations; thinking critically about issues that affect both media and society; communicating through social media platforms; and understanding how journalism influences the way individuals and groups are perceived.

Admission
- completion of J 301F with a grade of C- or better
- enrollment under the 2022-2024 catalog
- meet any requirements for the minor that the student’s major college might impose
The School reserves the right to limit the number of students accepted as Journalism Minors. If demand exceeds space available, students will be selected based on a review of academic record, particularly performance in J 301F.

In addition to specific course requirements, students must also fulfill the hour totals for overall, in residence, and upper division coursework as well as meet the grade minimums for each minor course.
- The minor requires total of 15 hours of coursework.
- Six hours of coursework must be taken at upper division level.
- Twelve hours of coursework must be taken in residence at UT Austin.
- Twelve hours must be taken for a letter grade (not pass/fail).
- A grade of C- or better is required, specifically for J 301F, 302F and 313P.
Under specific circumstances, the minor faculty committee may consider course substitutions for minor course requirements. Approval of any petition is not a guarantee.
Students must meet with the Moody Minors Advisor to discuss a petition.

Under specific circumstances, the faculty committee may approve course substitutions for minor course requirements. Students should meet with the minors advisor to discuss this process. Petitions will not be reviewed during registration or add/drop periods.
Additional criteria for a minor in Journalism:
- at least 12 hours must be taken in residence at UT Austin
- at least 12 hours must be taken for a letter grade (not pass/fail)
NOTES:
- Admission into the minor does not guarantee access to seats in restricted Journalism classes.
- Some courses may be restricted to only Journalism majors at various points of the registration access period.
- Not all courses are offered each semester.
- Most courses are offered at least once within a three-year period.
