Deborah Cannon is the Visuals Editor for NPR affiliate KUT, KUTX and the statewide news program The Texas Standard. She has worked as a photojournalist in the Austin Bureau of the Associated Press and for newspapers in Ohio, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Texas where she was a staffer for the Austin American-Statesman for 18 years.
During her time at the Statesman, she covered Lance Armstrong’s final two Tour De France victories, the Bush and Obama presidential campaigns, sixteen seasons of Texas football including two National Championship appearances, NBA National Championships, College World Series, numerous natural disasters, two shootings at Fort Hood military base, stories reflecting the implications of statewide and national policies on local marginalized groups and community news. While at the Statesman she earned the Online News Association Excellence and Innovation in Visual Digital Storytelling award, Society of Newspaper Design Breaking News award, numerous Texas Associated Press Managing Editor Awards and multiple National Press Photographer Region 8 clip wins.
Deborah also spent seven years working in public relations and communications for a quasi-governmental Texas agency (Lower Colorado River Authority) as a film maker and photographer where she helped to bring storytelling practices into community outreach strategy and increase engagement on social media platforms, including starting two web series, “Scenic Route” and “Uniquely Texas”. During her time there her film productions won two bronze and two silver Telly awards, two gold and one platinum Hermes awards, an award of excellence and award of distinction Communicator Awards and was nominated for a Lonestar Emmy.
Deborah is a graduate of the University of Texas with a B.S. in Journalism and a B.A. in Psychology.
