Ziyao Zhu is a master’s student on the Research and Theory track at the School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin. Her academic background centers on embodied communication in intercultural contexts, and her experiences in media, advertising, and multinational settings have shaped her interest in the evolving relationship between media and the human experience.

Ziyao is particularly drawn to questions about what makes communication good, in terms of its ethical implications, its role in shaping human relationships, and its entanglement with emerging technologies and media environments. In the era of attention scarcity, she is particularly interested in how embodiment and cognition intersect in media practices, and how theories of communication can integrate insights from neuroscience to gain a deeper understanding of perception, interaction, and meaning.
