John Savage is a journalist whose work has focused on Texas politics and political extremism. His writing has appeared in Politico, Al Jazeera, Salon, VICE, Pacific Standard, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, the Houston Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, The Texas Observer, and many others.
His 2016 Texas Observer longform feature “The Waiting Game” won a Barbara Jordan Media Award. His 2013 longform essay “The Worst School in Texas” was named one of Salon’s best essays of the year. He has judged regional and national feature writing contests and has been a guest on KUT’s Texas Standard and talk radio stations around the state. He holds a Masters of Arts in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
